The Oil & Gas industries demand reliability from their materials as they work to deliver energy across the globe. Hot Isostatic Pressing helps provide versatile solutions to their complex challenges.

Manufacturing processes that benefit from Hot Isostatic Pressing:

Additive Manufacturing

While metal Additive Manufacturing permits the creation of complex designs and shapes—the increasingly popular 3D printing process can also create a number of internal defects due to the nature of the method. Printed components may contain voids and other negative material properties that can compromise strength and integrity. For aerospace, defense, medical, and other high performance applications Hot Isostatic Pressing is critical to ensuring that material is optimized to reduce internal porosity, increase fatigue resistance, and address other concerns.

Casting

Hot Isostatic Pressing is commonly used for densification of Metal Castings. The process reduces variation in mechanical properties and improves component consistency. Defects and voids can be eliminated, increasing overall strength and durability. Utilizing HIP services during the Metal Casting manufacturing process is cost-effective and can help reduce rejection rates.

Metal Injection Mold

After sintering, Hot Isostatic Pressing can be utilized to increase the density of Metal Injection Molded components. The process removes voids in the microstructure and improves material properties in a quick and cost-effective manner.

Near Net Shape

Hot Isostatic Pressing is utilized during the Near Net Shape process to consolidate powder metal from a granular state to a solid state. The combination of high pressure and temperature eliminates porosity and can maximize properties including hardness, tensile strength, ductility, and density. The HIP process helps reduce material costs and machining for complex components.

Sputtering

Ideally suited for Sputtering, Hot Isostatic Pressing applies the pressure and heat necessary to process powder compact or solid metal. The uniform application and inert gas medium ensures homogeneous and quality composition. The final material is close to fully dense and mechanically robust.
